[QUOTE=terfer,Oct 6 2008, 08:12 PM]In NYC, if you carpool a bridge or tunnel the toll would be only $2 versus $8. I put the top up on the S had a buddy in passenger and went through carpool without a problem. Checked my EZpass account later that night and she gave me the carpool price!

Why would meeting "maximum occupancy" vehicle let you go through the carpool lane if the minimum is 3 people? Isn't the carpool lane designed to reduce emissions, gas usage, and traffic congestion? This makes sense for bikes since they get great mpg and don't take up that much space. You chose to buy a 2 seat car, which means to me that you chose to give up the right drive in a 3 person minimum lane.

So I drove around in NYC since 2005 without even knowing that I am overpaying tolls?! Can you be more specific which tunnel or bridge has a car pool discount? Also, how do they know how many people you have in the car to charge you less? I have EZ-pass and the tolls have always been the same (except for the recent hike) regardless of whether I am alone or with someone else.
Any bridge/tunnel that connects NY and NJ is valid for carpool discount (Ex. Holland, Outerbridge, Bayonne, GWB) . To get the discount you have to get into the cash lane and let the toll booth lady/dude know that you want carpool. I believe you have to have a carpool specific account(not sure about that, but my friend claims he cant get carpool with his ezpass) with EZpass as well to get the discount.

Not sure where you are at. But in California the law is that in places where they require three people for you to qualify for carpool, if your car only seats two people (i.e. roadster, pick-up w/bucket seats, etc) then you can use the carpool lane. They cannot require you to put more people in your car than your car has seatbelts for.

In Vancouver, on some bigger streets they turn some right side parking lanes into HOV lanes. Sometimes police are out checking for violators. The sign has three people on it, but usually they let sedans with at least two people in it go. I do recall seeing the police cite a Miata though.
