can't get the !@#$% shift knob off

i'm trying to install rick's shift boot and console cover, but i can't get the nut under the knob to turn clockwise (to loosen) at all. any suggestions?

Try to twist the knob counter-clockwise while applying the wrench in the opposite direction.
