Car was hit, what to do...?
Come on! This is not a frame bending, horrible accident. This is a relatively minor dent. I can't imagine that this is going to detract from the value of the car once it is fixed. It certainly shouldn't affect any mechanical operation or reliability of the car. Asking for money for loss of residual value sounds like bloodsucking to me. Might as well claim a neck injury as well.
Then again, if insurance pays for this, is it somehow recorded to show up on a carfax report???

Since the car has been hit and you've filed an insurance claim, it will definitely show up on a carfax report. It might lower the value of your car in the fact that a potential buyer might use the info as a bargaining point against you.

Neither show up on carfax. In fact, according to carfax my Integra has never been damaged and has a last known mileage of 11.
Not all insurance companies report to carfax, just like not all polce agencies do.
I'd go for a "Reduced value" claim too. I passed on buying an S2K because of damage and repair very similar to this. The repair job wasn't perfect so, it cost the seller a sale.
You insurance won't pay this, the other dudes will so, it's not something that's going to increase your rates.
Get as much from this dude's insurance as you can.

There is no way that this will affect the value of the car. If you were to sell the car and someone asked if it had been in an accident be up front and let them know the exact damage and keep receipts. If it's a bad repair job don't accept poor workmanship. With a new door skin it will be like new and you'll have no door dings.
I agree, there should be minimal effect to the resale value of your car on a repair like this. Just have them replace the dor skin and repaint. And repaint your front bumper while you are at it and your car will look like new again.
