They make airplanes out of it -- airplanes that fly in the stratosphere.

only if lower grade out sourced CF are just as strong as aerospace grade cf.

most of the hood trunk you can find is fiberglass with a thin cf overlay, to say the least it would act more like fiber glass than full cf

Cold weather shouldn't be a big problem on CF, its the Heat and sun (UV) exposure is what leads to the color changing of CF products

Well then he should ask smarter questions. He asked about carbon fiber. I answered about carbon fiber. I can't help it if people don't know the difference between CFRP and GFRP with a carbon fiber veneer.

BTW, they make a lot of airplane parts out of fiberglass, too.

The materials are fine. As with anything else, though, if you don't use them right or you make them using inferior techniques, your results will vary.

Of course, it just that i don't think the OP knows the difference between full autoclave honey comb struture cf from vaccum fiber glass resin with cf sheet overlay.

to be honest, i bring this up so the OP would do a simple google search on the topic, it's not even about cf overlay or fibreglass, or natural composite for that matter(because there's plane built with wood and nylon )

mike you nail it in the head, not all cf/resin/fibre/nylon are built to the same spec or quality. there's engineered plastic that meant to be super strong for a very short period of service life. Sadly but true, many of the part in most consumer product are not meant to work forever, for various reason and best interest of the MFG.

my cf hood held up fine for 3-4 years of ownership, it was a fiberglass overlay cf hood, weights less than the steel hood(not s2k), didn't really have any bad accident with it nor any bad weather(socal btw)

while we're on the topic of CF hood care in the cold, how about the rain? i mean it's ok if water gets in through the vents right? there should be nothing under there that can get damaged by water, right?

Not trying to be an ass but just use common sense about what water can get into to fawk something up. If you have a exposed air filter you certainly dont want water getting on that. but other than that there really shouldnt be any problems. Just depends on your engine mods.
