This may seem like a dumb question, but why does the cabin filter get dirty?

Obviously, running the AC and heater with the fan will draw dirty air into the cabin. What if you seldom run either device and do not run the vent fan much either? Does simple differential air pressure while the car is at speed send contaminants thru the cabin filter?
