Default Chassis vs engine VIN

Hello again from Belgium,

after searching the forum for VIN info, I am still curious why the chassis number and the engine number seem to differ slightly... The serial number in the engine VIN is mostly higher then that of the chassis!

- Could it be because some new engines are shipped separately to dealers to be used as a replacement engine in an S2000?

- Could it be because some F20C engines are bought by others to install them in their cars (like the Type-R engine from the Civic in the Ariel Atom)?

- ???

The Last part of the VIN of the chassis is a sequential number. As far as I know we are talking about the last 6 digits. The last 5 digits = the sequential production number, the first digit = the country (0 = USA, 8 = Canada, 2 = Europe or Belgium etc.) Do we have a new sequence for each country/part of the world for every production year?

Thanks for any info,
Frank.

you can decipher vin codes here

if the engine has a different VIN than the chassis, then the engine was swapped into that chassis. one wonders why it doesn't have the original engine in it if you bought it that way.

I don't think that's right, WI. The Engine Number that's printed on the top end of the engine (beneath the valve cover) does not necessarily match the VIN. My Engine number is my VIN minus 4.

My understanding is that the engines are made in batches and then fitted into the cars. So, I believe they're usually close in number, but not guaranteed to match.

i was referring to the VIN that is on the engine. (sticker on front, and a stamped vin hidden elsewhere)

if there is another kind of engine number or serial number on the engine, I have no idea.

My engine VIN is 18 HIGHER than my chassis VIN The car is bought new 1,5 months ago and came with the original white plastic covering.

And a friend with a newly bought MY2004 has an engine VIN 9 LOWER than the chassis VIN

First I was assuming that there are more engines produced than there are chassis, but... seeing sometimes HIGHER and sometimes LOWER engine numbers, perhaps as Chazmo already said they work in batches and don't mind which engine goes in which chassis

Anybody else with higher engine than chassis numbers???

I think it is because of the way the S is made...in batches.

your accords and civics are very likely to be "numbers matching".
