I bought the same idea off ebay a few years ago for $10. Came with an LED and all the wiring; I simply wired it up along with my radar detector and placed the LED along the A-pillar trim. Worked for me for over a year.
This ones a little more complicated. It started out as a simple idea, but because of the way the light on the dash works and voltage feeds from the car, we ended up having to make a tiny semi-complex circuit. Here's the initial unit that was made:

Since then, it's been bulked up and added on to. The ignition system threw us some curves we had to address because the first batch was frying after a few hours of use. After hooking the car up to a scope, we figured out the problem and made some changes that should make this unit long term. The latest one hasn't skipped a beat since last week.

you could do it cheaply by buying and alarm scanner for 20 bux. you probalby can get a cool looking one.
under the dash in the fuse area you have the 3 male slot to connect
you just need to connect yellow to 'ACCessory' and connect red to '12v+ constant' and ground the black one on the side wall.

unless you are going for the oem look

the oem led is already powered by 12v+ you just need to ground a black/yellow wire(i think) near the hood open latch to light up the led.
if you are really cheap like me. i just used a wire and connect that black/yellow to the "accessory' male plug which ground when car is off and 12v when the car is on(shutting off led). it doesnt blink but it does it job and is crazy cheap.
Me likes your idea more.

Give me a few weeks to sell the current ones to my local guys so I can monitor any problems if they happen. After that, I'll start selling the new version to you guys here. I'll post updates as they come along.

It would be nice if this mod could be made to do more than just blinking an LED light. I'm thinking...wouldn't it be great if this mod could also disable either the ignition system, fuel pump, starter, etc...

Not only would the mod deter theft...it could help prevent it.

That's called an alarm system

Yeah, there were a few other things that I wanted it to do, but you just end up stacking the dollars up and it starts getting close to the price of the real deal. I think this is a good compromise and cheap enough to not be a big deal.
