Default Check engine light keeps coming on!!!

My CEL appeared approx. 5 times since I bought my car earlier this year. After it comes on I would check the gas cap, obviously it would be loose. I then tighten it and continue driving, eventually the light would disappear. So after every fillup, I would tighten it 4-5 clicks. I also fillup to about 3/4 full to allow more room for the gas to expand. The CEL came on again today and now I'm beginning to be curious, should I just continue tightening the gas cap or bring this issue into the dealer? Thanks

I notice that if I don't line my gas cap up just right, then it seems to start clicking like it is closed before it is closed all the way. There have been a few days where I really had to mess with it, put it on and off like 10+ times in a row before I could get the damn thing closed right. Maybe if you have constant troubes you could get a dealer to check it out and/or replace your gas cap?

Personally, I only had the check engine light come on once and since then have just made sure it closed correctly and I've been fine.

It's interesting to note that the spark plug issue is specifically for the Check Engine indication. Of course, that would likely be the least problematic end result. Take it in for the update (free) or at least check you spark plu torque and set it to the new numbers - 18 lb.-ft. instead of 13 lb.-ft.

RSXTypeR,

Here's a novel idea - - take it to the dealer.

Either scan it yourself with a scan tool ...or bring it in to the dealer!

RSX...This exact thing kept happening to me and the gas cap kept working itself loose.I took the car in and they did a pressure test on the gas tank and discovered I had a bad gas cap, they replaced it...problem went away.
