There is no replaceable chip in the ECU; most manufacturers got rid of those years ago.

this is kinda off topic, but i heard that vw/audi are getting rid of their chips as well starting 2004, so unfortunately there will be no "inexpensive" chip replacement to bump up power on their 1.8T's anymore.

You heard wrong. How can you "get rid" of a chip? The air/fuel/boost/throttle maps need to be stored somewhere. In the VW/Audi world, tuners have figured out how to crack the code and modify the stock programs. The ECU is removed from the car and the chip that contains this info is desoldered from the motherboard and replaced. Most tuners have an option where you can switch back and forth between stock, chipped, and high octane programs with a remote or with your cruise control stalk.

I wonder why the Honda world hasn't figured out how to do this yet. You guys still need a seperate AFC that must be dyno tuned, right?

A $500 (installed) chip in my car got me a completely reliable +50 HP and +85 lb-ft with no other mods. The best VW has been able to do so far to prevent tampering is to put a "chastity belt" in the new A4s...essentially a metal bar that needs to be removed to gain access to the ecu. But that doesn't stop most people.

Re: Audi Chips

They'r e not getting rid of the chips.. they've been getting rid of turbos!

notice the S4 is now a v8 very fast, but no ability to chip

Chipping my A4 was one of the best mods i've done to date...

Here's hoping the 1.8t engine keeps showing up in VW/Audi platforms to let others know the thrill!

course, I'm not giving up my s2k for nothin or no body!

Evil G- reportedly the replacement for the 1.8T will be a 2.0 16v FSI turbo, so turbos aren't going away completely, but the 1.8T will be phased out starting with the Mk V Golf/Jetta.

However, even n/a VW/Audi motors can be chipped, albeit with less dramatic results. A chip in a VR6 usually produces about 10 HP or so. That's why I'm wondering why there aren't similar products for Hondas. Or Mazda/Nissan/Toyota for that matter.

PS- nice vanity plate...my wife's a doc too!

GTI 20v,

When people typically talk about chips they mean the ones that can be removed easily, not the desoldering technique.

Ianbrown, in the VW/Audi world, once a chip is desoldered, a pin connector is put on the motherboard, making future chip changes a 10 minute job.
