Clear tape on leading edge of VIN stickers?
As I was cleaning inside my door panels, etc. I noticed the VIN stickers on the panels all have a piece of clear tape on the one edge. I though, WTF... was the label not sticky on the one side or what? It wouldn't be so bad if the tape wasn't getting dirty
Then I checked on our 99 CR-V, same thing. Under the hood, the front fender VIN stickers had lost their clear tape and left hardened adhesive behind. I guess the heat from the engine made it happen, the other VIN labels still had the dirtying tape. So I checked it out, there is no lack of adhesiveness of the VIN stickers.
Went back to the S2000 and found the same thing, the VIN labels stick fine. So I removed all that extra tape.
I won't be able to sleep tonight, the same as the night when I removed the "do not remove under penalty of law"
stickers from my matress.

I think you are referring to the "self-destroying" design of VIN stickers. In other words, if someone tried to tamper with or remove one of the vin stickers, it would come off in such a way that the stricker could not be used on another part (the number would not be readable anymore). It would also leave adhesive where the original sticker was.
Aw, com'on Dan, I thought anyone who never noticed would HAVE to care
This isn't the VIN sticker itself, just an extra piece of tape that *looks* like was added to help keep the VIN sticker down.
