I don't have to pull the handle either, but I do it since I don't want to put undue stress on the latches. I don't want squeaky latches, like some people had a problem with.

Hmmm. I have to pull mine down a little. It is easier now than when new. Wonder if the problem is related to the problem with the boot cover. haven't had mine adjusted yet.
