Coil Over vs Ground Control w Koni's
Been doing a lot of research on this. If you had a choice would u prefer a set of coilovers or GC with koni yellows. Now im referring to japanese coilovers (tein, buddy club, etc) not high end stuff like moton, penske or ohlins.
Wouldn't you be better off with a high quality shock like koni yellow with a high quality spring like eibach?
Please state your choice and why. Im specifically looking for advantages of going with one set up over the other.
Im leaning towards the GC route with Koni yellows. With a high quality shock and spring, how could a coilover set up be better, you get all the adjustability with GC's - spring dampening and ride height that coil over's offer, at a lower price with a well know shock manufacturer and spring manufacturer, and to top it off you get to select your own spring rate and it costs less

I have this setup as well, no complaints other than the Konis seem temperature sensitive. In my opinion, based on some calcs I did, the 10K spring rates on the typical JDM coilover are too high even for track use. But I'm only saying this from doing some math; I've tracked maybe 8 days only and also have no other coilover experience. The one benefit other coiulovers could offer is to better match the damping curve of the shock to the springs; you're stuck with whatever Koni has.

I had a Ground Control setup with KYB AGX's on my '99 Miata a few years back and loved them. The car cornered like it was on rails. The best $750 I spent on mods for that car.

Well made coil overs have benefits such as correct valving for the spring rate. Benefits of the GC kit include the choice of spring rate, and unless you're doing some heavy tracking, the aggresive valving of the koni yellows should match up well. If you are hardcore, you can get the konis revalved to match your spring rate, and also you can have them modified for external rebound adjustment. The damping adjustment + ride height adjustment is a nice option as well. Coilovers often rate the damping automatically according to the height so you don't have as much adjustability.
Konis can go low, but they shouldn't be slammed. The shaft is shorter than a stock shock, but they will bottom out if you go too low. The suggested max lowring is listed on the koni site.

I have Koni's/Espelir springs, no complaints. I can put it on the soft settings for a ride a little more comfortable than stock. Or I can put it on the firmest settings for a stiff ride.
Espelirs+Koni's on lowest perch = a really low drop though

Thanks for the great info.
I wont ever be using the car for the track, just some aggresive street driving here and there. I only plan to lower the car 1.25 inches at the most.
Thanks for the great info. Im going to order the GC's.

On the street with 1.25" lowering, Koni Yellows + GC kit will treat you very well. Talk to the guys at GC and have them suggest front and rear spring rates for the type of driving you will be doing.
