Default Console Speakers Midrange/tweeters - (pic)

I've added a pair of JBL GTO220s to the each side of the console as shown in the photo below. Its a decent addittion to the rest of the setup I have. Supplemental midrange is always good right?

Its nonintrusive, sound isn't muffled, and it was very easy to install. Its a flush mount "I-mount" setup.

What are you using for the door speakers?

Do you have a sub in the trunk?

looks pretty good... but with the concentration of speakers behind you, does it sound like being at a concert but standing with your back to the stage?

Hi Lucid

The first thing I did after getting my S2000 was replacing the stock speakers with Polk Separates and adding a 325 watt MTX amp. Sounds pretty good, even through the stock head unit. Definitely lacks something from behind, something to make the sound "fuller." I love the idea of your 4" rears and of those wee things firing through your vertical console.

Also thank you for openly sharing your ideas and know-how with the rest of us instead of looking to profiteer from your fellow members.

Could you show us some pix (if you have any) of what it looks like when you remove those panels, how much room is behind them, and the panels from the inside with speakers installed?

I think what you've done is great.

Thanks.

No its doesn't feel like your back turned to the stage. Its more like being in enveloped in the music. I have 2 amps running now. One pumping 50 rms x 2 to the rear panels and tweets. The other amp is powering a 10" sub at 200 RMS. The JBLs are run off the rear leads of the radio now instead of the panel/tweeters.

I have a total of 9 speakers going and it sounds terrific. I'm finally done with the stereo setup.

Isolated, the JBLs are supplemental. Just having those in the console and front speakers, it won't sound that good. But they are flush mounted and they aren't muffled by anything. Not a bad addition for $50. They're getting 22 Rms from my head unit.

The JBLs seem to be the only 2 1/2 midrange tweet out there. There is just enough room to put them in. I took off the rear panel, measured from the panel towards the console 2 3/4. Then I measured 2" up from that small curve base thing at the bottom. Thats where I made my pilot hole. Then I used a drill hole cutter (like the kind to add deadbolts and such). It Is safe to do, only thing behind it is the base of the roll bar. Push the new speaker in, twist the retaining ring on from the back and its in place. The trick is to get the area that is the flattest and has enough room behind it.

It looks professional, and its seemless.

Lucid,

I too would love to see pics of whats behind the panels...I want to know how much room there is to play with back there, and is the room symmetric form the driver's to passenger's side?

Yes the mid/tweets on the console are symmetrical. Depth can be a problem though. Those JBLs are the only ones I've found that could pull off what I was trying to do.

If you didn't see this before I'll post it again :

The area circled is where I put the rear 4s. You can wire everything on the right side and just pass it behind the the console for the left side.
