My soft top rattles over bumps unless I hold the retract button for a sec after closing it (and locking the latches) to create some artificial tension. My top is still original so I prepared to deal with it if this causes a tear. But just wondering how many of you know about this or feel the need to use it.

My 01 is in excellent condition but the car has always been garaged. The 303 Protectant gave it a new look - darkened the fabric. I was seeing some "thin" areas in a couple of places where it rubbed against the metal pieces. I glued on some small squares of heavy black canvas fabric on the inside where those rub points were and I think that's going to extend the life for a long time.

Lumberjack - what kind of glue did you use? Any concern about the blue bleeding through the fabric of the top and being visible on the outside of the top?

Also, I wonder if leaving the top unlatched except when driving would have the effect of keeping the top tighter when you do latch it for driving? Seems like a tighter top might have less squeaks and rattles?

I used super glue on a 2" x 2" piece in two places on each side where the rubbing and thinning was occurring. I was also concerned about bleed through but I think I caught the thinning early enough where it was fine. I used a heavy duty black canvas (kind of heavy twill) I got at the sewing section in Walmart. Some other guys used Gortex stick-on patches. Those are prettier on the inside but in their picture you can see it from the outside (not sure why). See this thread:

I also installed new Modifry elastic straps.

Yeah, I did goretex patches and e9000 adhesive. You can se the impression of the patch on the outside. Not the best look, but I would rather have that than a hole in the top.

Modifry straps and Raggtopp protection.

The car has been in the family since December 2003 and it’s on the original top. Garage kept it’s whole life, but the preventative measures are things that have been done over the past 2 years.

I might do something like this to my tops as preventative maintenance. But, I'd like to find a way to do it that is not visible on the outside.
Right now my tops show no sign of damage.
