Default Cooling issues

So my old radiator was cracked from old age and prior to that my car didn’t have heating issues. I now have a koyorad radiator with oem fan shrouds mounted on but my car is still have heating issues. So my vans don’t turn on and was wondering if they turn in while the car is in drive I’d appreciate what you guys have to say on the matter

This thread should probably be in the under the hood section. Maybe a moderator can move it.

I suspect air in the coolant. What procedure did you use to bleed air after radiator install? Turn heat on high, blower high, does it almost burn your fingers if held right up to vent? If not, that confirms air in coolant.

Car is dangerous to drive. A ticking overheating time bomb. One good overheat and engine is toast. It can be fine for a long time like this, then one day out of nowhere, overheat.

If heater won't burn your fingers, do not drive it!

There are two basic ways to bleed air. The official way with parking nose up, then using the various air bleed valves in the rigjt sequence, at the right time, over and over until no more air. This is messy and a bit frustrating if you haven't done it a few times before.

The other way is cleaner abd much easier. Get a Lisle funnel. A big yellow funnel that mounts to radiator like a radiator cap. You overfill it, with car parked nose up. Then just let engine run until funnel stops bubbling. Then there is a way to remove still full funnel without spilling a drop.

You have tonrev engine a few times while funnel is setup. And its a good idea to also use the main engine air bleed valve once or twice, to get any air trapped up there. But I find this way much cleaner, much less user error prone.

From easy to hard, basically from the service manual -

With car OFF:
  • Check fuses. Replace as necessary.
  • Check Relays <- check for continuity at pins 1&2 of the relay. Should be none. Then connect pin 4 to 12v, pin 3 to ground and check for continuity between pins 1&2. There should now be continuity. Replace as necessary.
  • Jump the 1&2 pins in the relay socket and see if the fans turn on.
  • If they do - remove jumper pin, leave relay unplugged turn car on, and check for voltage at pin3. If no voltage, you have a short somewhere. If there is voltage, turn off car, unplug fan switch, jump the pins and turn on car. Fans should turn on. Replace as necessary.
  • If they do not - Disconnect fan plugs and check for continuity at the plugs. Check both voltage and ground. If no continuity, then you have a short somewhere.
  • Connect fans directly to 12v and ground and see if they run (if you got this far, most likely not, otherwise you have a short somewhere). Replace as necessary.

A quick and easy way to check if the fans work is to turn on the A/C. If the fans do not turn on, they most likely are not working. Its possible that with the leak in the radiator, some coolant made its way into some of the wiring and caused a fuse to blow. On the worse side of the spectrum its also possible that depending on where the leak is, some of the coolant made its way into the fan motor and fried it. Goodluck with your findings!
