Default Cost of Owning s2000

planning on getting an 04 new (from the s2000 market place thing) or used, so assuming i dont get in an accident, or break something major like the diff how much does owning an s2000 cost? i will proably put on around 20,000 miles per year and plan to own for around 2-4 years
current have an accord 01, the only maintenance is oil change haha the tires last forever like 50-80k
i plan to try to become a mostly DIY person with most minor things

like monthly/semi-monthly
~gas
~oil change
~oil/airfilter change
~insurance
~car exterior/interior cleaners

annually/biannually (alot of months)
~diff fluid, other fluid
~tires
~brakes
~valve tuneup check
~other maintenences that are significant

How much will i be spending on the s2k beside the initially 30k ish price?

like first year how much will i spend minus the mods i may do?
and the following years with maintenence and will the cost rise with the age of car?
i want to make sure i am not buying a car that cost too much to maintain
thx you all

After spending 30Kish, you will have to:

1. Pay taxes on that - probably over $2000
2. Pay for insurance (I pay about $600/yr on the S - but I am also a girl, no accidents, no tickets)
3. Are you going to finance the car? If you are, you can calculate your finance charges into it
4. Gas prices (I usually pay about $18/fillup and get about 210 miles - of course if you have a heavy foot, you will probably get less miles )
5. Maintenance on the car - which the only thing I've had to do so far is change the oil (I use Mobil 1 - and I spend about $35 on filter and oil/3 months) and changed the tranny fluid (can't remember how much I paid for Redline fluid)
6. Car maintenance stuff - I use zaino and their stuff is pretty pricey, but I haven't had to buy much else from the inital $100 or so I spent
7. The tires had to be changed after about a year.. that was about $700 after mounting and shipping etc (but I did auto-x on the original tires so they wore out pretty quick)

There is a pretty nice True Cost to Own (TCO) calculator on Edmunds http://www.edmunds.com/apps/cto/intro.do

I will tell you that having owned this car new since Aug 2001, I haven't had any maintenance issues with the car (just the spark plug recall). I just do oil changes every 3000 miles or 3 months (whichever comes first), get gas, and make sure my tires haven't worn down too much. I also auto-x the car and that is a whole other set of costs - race tires, extra rims, etc. I also only have about 17,000 miles on the car (I usually only drive the 15 miles to and from work) but my baby is 3 years old!

Anyways, I hope this helped and I hope you do decide to get an S in the future.. it's been nothing but fun for me so far

With the exception of tires, my S2000 hasn't been any more expensive to own or maintain than any Honda I've owned in the past.

Good luck.

If your going to leave your S stock, you wont spend any more money then you would on any other car. Now if you decide to do some mod's it can become quite an expence. When I bought mine my intentions were to leave it stock, wash and wax and that's it. Then I found this forum and....

Now 25K in mod's later.......

Depending on your age I'd say insurance is going to be your biggest cost. As far as tires go,I've got 18,500 on my rears and they still have a pretty good amount of tread on them.

It just depends how you drive it. I have gone through 14 tires in 2 years and I generally spend about $10/ day on gas. (and I live in Ohio where gas is pretty cheap)

tires i will try to be conservative, i MAY visit the drag strip but no auto x stuff. and i always try to be conservative on gas no lead foot

it sounds liek s2k isnt too high maintenence except insurance man i called geico the other day for the 15 min i got quoted 4000+ for 6 months that is crazzy(almost 700 a month!!!)! hopefully when i go under my parents title and such and whittle the price down it will be less or the s2k might not be viable. im located in seattle washington btw, what do u think is a fair price for insurance, i have no accident, 1 speeding ticket and yea~! thx though for the information especially the first response 10q tweety

btw does being a girl really make a big difference?

Tires aren't cheap and you'll go through them quickly especially if you buy high performance tires (I currently have Potenza SO3's on mine, $842 for all four).

I don't do any work on the "s" myself...an oil change costs me $37.95, differential service is $55.00 - $60.00, transmission fluid service is around $100, and a coolant flush is around $120. I take my car to Honda everytime so these prices are probably pretty expensive.

I'm currently due for an oil change...but I have no time to get one

Holy smack.. $4000+ for 6 months?!?!?!? That is just crazy!

And personally I do think that being a girl kinda helps I have a friend who is 24 and he pays about $2000 for 6 months for his '99 Subaru Impreza RS. I thought that was outrageous! My insurance was never more than $1000/yr and I've had insurance for about 8 yrs now. It was highest when I first got insurance for my '96 Nissan Altima, but it tapered down to $800/yr for my '99 GSX and now I pay a combined $1100/yr for both my GSX and S.

Do you pay insurance for your Honda Accord? How much is that? I am just curious as to the insurance difference between that and the S2000. Does it make a difference if you bought an S new or used? Maybe a used one might be cheaper to insure.

Wow, I am still in shock over the insurance cost for you

But I hope it all works out for you!!
