so the RE050 do these last a while? vs s02 s03?
RE050 has a treadwear rating of 140
S-02 has a treadwear rating of 140
S-03 has a treadwear rating of 220

(all per Tirerack)

These are all the same manufacturer, so I would think the numbers are pretty comparable. The RE050's should last no longer on average as the S-02's. S-03's should have the best longevity of the three.

also would it help if i bought a beater? to make insurance cheaper?
i could get a beater from a friend for 1-2 hundredish... would it be worth it to get that and somehow include the s2k as a 2nd car or a less used car? or would it just waste money on insurance for the beater?

You can do that as long as you are willing to put up with limits on how much you can drive the car in a year. If you exceed your estimates and get into an accident, you probably will not be covered when the adjuster checks the odometer.

Why in the WORLD are some of you folks changing transmission fluid twice a year? I can understand changing diff. fluid once a year, and tranny fluid MAYBE once a year if you drive enough miles, but tranny fluid is inside of a sealed case that has NO interaction with burning fossil fuels like inside of an engine. The oil in your transmission should be just FINE for at least 2 years or 30k miles.

That being said, my car just crossed the 10k mile mark but is 2.5 years old already. I am going to change my tranny and diff. fluids in the near future.

rickycrx: For better or worse, some owners have been advocating a very aggressive change schedule for fluids. I left my factory oil in until 7500, and get flamed a lot for it even though its in the owners manual. For what its worth, I did change the clutch fluid at around 15k miles, because it looked very dark. I also had the diff fluid changed at 7500 miles based on the recomendation (and pics) of xviper.

tires i will try to be conservative, i MAY visit the drag strip but no auto x stuff. and i always try to be conservative on gas no lead foot

it sounds liek s2k isnt too high maintenence except insurance man i called geico the other day for the 15 min i got quoted 4000+ for 6 months that is crazzy(almost 700 a month!!!)! hopefully when i go under my parents title and such and whittle the price down it will be less or the s2k might not be viable. im located in seattle washington btw, what do u think is a fair price for insurance, i have no accident, 1 speeding ticket and yea~! thx though for the information especially the first response 10q tweety

btw does being a girl really make a big difference?
Your best bet would probably to see if you could get the car listed under your parent's insurance policy.

IMO, $4000/6 months for insurance is not worth it.

High insurance rates for young drivers is a reason many of us waited a few years before getting our S.

Good luck.
