Costs of winter Driving
Please help me make a decision guys,
Should i get a beater? i live in the north east. but there really hasnt been much snow in the past 5-6 years. Supposedly a friend told me that the famers alminac predicts a rough winter this year. And yes i have done searches. But no one has layed out the pros and cons with cost.
So, Here is a rough cost break down analysis:
Winter Beater Stook
Have to buy a car~$2K wear and tear from salt/snow
Tax, title, reg~$500? Snow tires and rims~$1K
Property Tax~$150 a year Need a hard top???
Maintenance/repair costs/brakes/tires~?
I guess insurance will probably be negligible since I would be putting the S2k under fire and theft only. And I assume it will be cheaper insuring an 8 year old car as opposed to a 01 32K one. What do you guys do with your beaters during spring/summer/fall? Do you insure it so that you can drive year round? Or do you store it? What else? What should I do?? buy a beater or just wash/wax my car often?
Thanks,
Bobby

It's the old story. If you have to ask "How much?" then you can't afford it. I kept my old (fifteen years) car registered, and drive it once a week for a half hour or so to keep it ok. Put snow tires all around, and will use it when roads are salt/slush/snow covered as well. I plan to keep the S for a long time. My little Fiero is still in good shape for all it's years, and love the way it handles in the snow. That's my plan anyway for Winter. I think I'll have to get the hardtop for the S though, as the Winter's wrath on the softtop seems a bit rough. No decision yet. Also thinking of building a garage. Does any of this help?
Get a winter beater.. old man WINTER is strictly too cruel to any vehicle.. I don't care how well or how frequently anyone washes the underbody, there will still be rust build up in months and years to come because of the condensation due to the ambient temp. changes..

MOVE, then you won;t need a winter beater
I actually have both of my cars insured for the entire year. Actually, if you make the old beater car your primary car and the S2K you secondary car, the insurance will either be the same that you pay now, or might even frop. When I added the S2K onto my policy, the insurance only went up $400/year.
