Cracked Plastic Rear Window
Anyone heard of the rear window cracking? Well mine did. I have a 2000 model with 50K miles. For the first year I used the pipe insulation wrapped in flannel to prevent creasing, but over time found that the window had grown resilient to creases. As I was lowering the top last night I heard a pop and upon raising the top saw that the window had cracked about 1/3 from the bottom horizontally across most of the window. After reading several posts about replacement I am concerned it will never be the same. Anyone have a good window replacement story? Also, has anyone tried to do the replacement themselves?
Don't know how successful or not the replacement would be, but I'd certainly take that up with Honda as a "good will" service that they should at least pay half of, if not cover the whole thing. I've had reasonable success with such things in the past, and Honda has something of a reputation for covering catastrophic failures even outside of the warranty.
It was 50 degrees F. I called the dealer and they basically said they hadn't heard of such a thing and to call the upholstery shop, but they'd be happy to sell me the new window for $218 or so.
I'd look into getting the glass window and '02 top. OneQuickS2k was able to do the retro fit himself with only slight modification to his '00 frame. Search for 'retro fit'. I would love to have a glass window on my '01 and my window isn't even cracked.
Ouch, sorry to hear about the bad news.
I have also model year 2000, but with over 80,000miles and I don't take care of the back window at all but
still ok.
Anyway, good luck in getting it fixed, hopely someone will do the job right.

I have read about someone getting a cracked rear window replaced under warranty before, but I can't remember who (might have been on the S2KCA forum). Temperature did play a role in that crack, but I don't know if the car was out of warranty or not.
I had someone shoot a hole in my rear window and had it replaced via insurance. The story my dealership was giving me at that time was that it was easier to replace the entire top than to replace the rear panel, so that's what the insurance paid for.
I later learned that they only replaced the back panel. They told me this when I brought my car in after someone slashed the top to break into my car. (I guess they forgot they charged my insurance company to replace the entire top!)
Anyway, my point is that if you get the same story from your dealer (if you take it to a dealer) and they haven't ever replaced a top before, ask them if they can get an automotive upholstery company to do it under warrenty. These guys are the ones who generally do convertable top repair, and they can do it under warranty.

I pushed the dealer , and then honda Corp for a new one , mine is a 2000 with 60K on it , and it has bad visibility due to creasing , they obviously know it was a bad design as they changed the new ones , just call them and don't let up , they will replace it @ n/c

Mine is also cracked - Only about 1 inch long (but leaks water none the less) and is in the upper third of the window......I have been "dancing" with Honda on the matter and they are balking at any replacement - Their logic (or lack thereof) and what they pitifully refer to as "Customer Service" is abominable......Mine is still under warranty and they still refuse to do anything.
I have read (on this board) that others have had theirs replaced just for the "hazing" that occurs from operating the top.....While mine is also scratched, the water leakage is my practical issue here.
All this indicates, IMO, a significant design/product quality issue that Honda does not want to address..........For now, I am just warming-up in my fight with them about this and would be very interested in others' thoughts on this matter.....I have gone thru the dealer service manager, the division service manager, and Honda America Customer Service Reps and associated managers......The thing that is the most interesting (and maddening at the same time) is ONLY the dealer's service manager has ever taken the time to look at the window - NOBODY from Honda has seen it yet they are quite comfortable and determined about declining to fix it.
Any thoughts out there??????

I had my window replaced because of hazing. Honda picked up a portion of the tab and I got the rest. I paid $300.
IMO - If it cracked and still under warranty, they should replace it. I told the service guy that I wanted the service manager present to see it. They brought the regional manager in to see it personally without me requeting him present.
