I got on a waiting list for an M3 and decided to pick up an S2000 to tide me over until the bimmer arrives.

I had a 1982 911SC. I loved that car. It was in perfect condition with 88K original miles, had a brand new OEM dashboard and headliner, repainted by Mercedes, Euro headlights and lowered, just gorgeous. But I like my S2K better for a lot of reasons.

1. The S2K is flat out faster and better handling. Of course, that's not saying much since the 1982 911SC was made before they went to the larger Carerra engines. But I would blow my old car off the road, no doubt.

2. A/C didn't work in the 911.. and it was a black car. Ugh.

3. The S2K is a Honda, and therefore (historically at least for me) reliable. But my 911 was also very reliable believe it or not. I had the alternator replaced once, but that was because I jump started the car when I wasn't supposed to. My mechanic said the 911SC of that year came with a very sensitive French-built alternator which will get blown by jumping the battery. Repair was only $100.

4. Little things that go with owning an older car started to catch up with me. One of the power windows stopped working, the vents didn't work (as the A/C didn't eother), the cruise control fuse kept blowing so cruise control was useless (big deal, I know), the valves had to be adjusted every 15K miles or so which involved dropping out the engine (yikes, at least $700 to do it), and it was stubborn in cold weather as the oxygen sensor tried to do its thing.

5. I wanted a convertible, and I couldn't get my hands on a 911 Cabrio for less than 25K that wouldn't require a fair amount of maintenance.

The 911 had a suprisingly large amont of space compared to the S in terms of both passenger seating and trunk space. The most beautiful thing about the 911 though was this: I bought it for 16K, and sold it for 15K after owning it for three years. Nothing holds its value like a 911. I used to get a fair amount of attention and compliments in the 911 (everyone thought it was a 1989 and couldn't believe it when I told them it was a 1982), but nothing compared to the S. People are constantly asking questions and gawking.

I basically wanted to get another sports car, but without all the hassles of maintenance. Booyah, enter the S2K.

But if you're interested in getting a 911, the rule of thumb is to buy the latest year of 911 you can afford. They have always made vast improvements with each model year.

On the other hand, the Porsche was a HUGE disappointment. IMO, it is poorly designed and engineered, especially considering what it costs. In just one track day, the rotors warped and the gearbox overheated, toasting the synchros (necessitating a complete gearbox replacement by the guy I sold it to). The interior was a joke...dash pod literally bounced up and down; rattles and bangs everywhere, etc. etc. of Suffice to say, I doubt I'll ever own another Porsche again.
Hmmm...that's odd. I routinely took my '99 996 Carerra to the track and drove it hard...really hard. Never had any tranny or brake problems. Were you braking a lot? More than normal? Have you ever taken your S2K to the same track? Sounds like you might have gotten a lemon!

I have a 1988 911 Targa (for sale for interested parties ) in my garage next to the S2000, here is my take.

Appearance and panache--911 wins this one, it turns more heads and is very unique. It won't be mistaken for anything else.

Acceleration--S2000 without a doubt. The 911 also suffers from the lower torque down low. Its cams are set for performance close to redline and to get the performance you drive it similar to the S2k, like you stole it.

Steering--S2000. Not a big surprise here the steering is wonderful on the S2K. The 911 does have more feedback both good and bad.

Suspension--S2K--by a long shot on this. It won't loose its composure very easily. The 911 is very twitchy and soft compared to the S2K

Braking--This is a close one. The S2K is clearly more advanced and stops faster but the progressive feel and feedback of the 911 plus the abscence of ABS makes the 911 a little more pure I guess. I'd still give it to S2K by a bit.

Practicality--911 A lot more space plus you can get four people in it, even a child seat in the back.

Liberation--S2K by a long shot. I have a real hard time beating the crap out (or driving it like you should) of a collectors car. My 911 is pristine with very low miles.

Reliability---911 definately. Honda could never compare to Porche for reliability or low cost of repair.

All and all the only thing that I miss from driving the 911 is well the history, it is one of the greatest sports cars ever made and the 88 model year is the pinacle of the aircooled 911's.

I recently had a 1998 993 which I dearly loved but was afraid to drive much because of all the attention it drew. It had beautiful Fikse 3 piece wheels. I then sold it and bought a 2001 M3. I recently sold the M3 and made a nice $5,000. profit and bought my s2000. This car is the most fun I have had in a long time and I donot have to worry about it to much, plus there are lots of neat modifications you can do and you do not see many of them around!!

I barely bother to even glance at a new 911... unless it's the Turbo or one of the S models. All the others are way more common than S2000s here, and the older Porsches... no thanks. Probably dating myself here.
