Dealer's answer to 2-3shift NOTCHY Tranny problem(?)
I took my S2k to the dealer the otherday and
they said it was normal for MY02 S2000 transmissions to be notchy.
(WTH???)
Here is what they said.
" Transmission is shifting properly at this time. Checked fluid level and condition. This was found to be correct. Contacted Honda Technical Assitance REF:#1031525.
Transmission shift mechanism inside has very short throws with rods and detents. These shift rods are held into correct position by detent balls with stiff spring pressure to prevent transmission from slipping out of gear during acceleration. Transmission function is correct at this time and no repairs are recommend by Honda Techinical Assistance. The 2002 S2000 Transmission was assembled with update parts. No updates or TSB's apply to this vehicle."
They also provided me with the SHIFT FORKS DISASSEMBLY/REASSEMBLY manual.
I wish I could scan this and post it but sorry I have no scanner
I"ll use my digi cam later.
The service advisor kept emphasizing the fact that 2002 tranny had different parts
and since this is my 2nd documented complaint about my notchy transmission already they will cover my transmission if anything goes wrong even after my warranty expires.
Is that mean now I can do 7500RPM dumps with peace of mind?

Peter, you should drive some '00 or '01 S2000s so you can compare your transmission to those on previous years. I think you'll find that yours is relatively good by comparison.

Yeah and also keep in mind the amount of milage you have and the usage yo give to the car.... But in my opinion ive driven my freinds MY01 and i feel no diference although he feels the difference on mine. BTW about the clutch ihave 3000 miles on my car and tom. im taking it in cause the F@$& thing is already slipping in every danm gear(and i know i havent hit it that hard and even if i did 3k miles is a lttle too fast..dont you guys think?) Anyways hope hey do not try to blame it on me bcause my tranny does feel notchy too btit doesnt bother me.

I'm thinking the nochy-ness is a result of the grind fix.
There is a small ring that presses on the syncros to get them to work, a thicker ring will make them work harder = less chance for a grind. But it feels like something is catching.
There are teeth along side the gears and on the syncro sleeves, I think they could stand a greater angle so that you have more of a chance to just slide into gear instead of having to "find it"
Im actually working on some modifications to the syncros to fix all this crap, I have a couple extra trannies to play with
