Dealerships
Just got back from College Park Honda. They quoted me a price on the phone and when I got there the manager said he hadn't approved it. I walked out. I will never go back to that GD place.
Someone else posted something awhile back about getting a quote over the phone and then driving something like an hour and a half to the dealership only to be told the same thing, and when he asked to speak to the sales manager he was told by him he can't stand behind prices his sales staff quotes and the price he was quoted over the phone was way to low. It's all BS just to get you in the door.
My story is a little different. The first dealership I went to I hardly even dealt with the salesman. We went for about a 5 minute test drive, with the salesman telling me constantly to "don't go so fast" (65 in a 55??) and "you might want to grab the next gear", this on a S2K with 4600 miles. From then on, it was dealing with their sales manager...who told me that it would be a lot of work for him to find a '02 blue with low mileage, that he was doing me "a favor" to look for one for me, etc etc. I was finally told that it would take 3 months, so I gave them a $500 deposit. They would not even begin to look for this car until I gave them the deposit.
Meanwhile. I would call every few days to see if they had any luck in getting me my car. I would either be mostly ignored or given a runaround.
Finally, someone here on the forums suggested I try Hall Honda in Virginia Beach (thanks BlackBeauty!). I went in on a Thursday night, and got the exact car I wanted ('02 Suzuka Blue with 8 miles) the NEXT DAY!!! And for a much lower price too. Plus, I was sucked up to and made to feel like a VIP.
When I went back to the first dealership, I finally got my deposit back, but after a fight and a call to the general manager. So, something I should have known anyway.... shop around, and remember - they need your business, and if they don't act like they do, go somewhere else...

It's called lowballing. The guy who owns a piece if not all of CP Honda is Dick Patterson who was the one of the guys who helped earn Rosenthal Nissan and a bunch of the other Rosenthal dealers one of the worst reputations for their sales departments. He taught the Darvish family (DarCars) the same way. It's a shitty way to do business but he has been doing business that way for over 20 years and makes a lot of money with it.
Thanks for the replies. I'm also looking into other regions so that I don't limit myself to the whims of the DC area. It seems as though dealers are pretty unreasonable around here. And yes, College Park honda does suck.
