demand for S2000's
hey everyone....i bought my s2000 used with 2000 miles for 30, 000....the dealer told me that i got it for about 500 more than he paid for it. He said he had it on his lot for 3 months and no one even test drove it. The part about it sitting on his lot was true, the test drive part I can't confirm
My friend is a dealer with a Manheim account, and he lets me browse the database. Dealers are payng over MSRP at auctions because they know they can sell it for a lot more. Last year's model is selling at MSRP. check edmunds.com, they ususally have an accurate market value.
Keep in mind that the selling price 2 states away really has nothing to do with what you can get. Dealers around here are ASKING ~33k for low-mileage cars. Who knows what they're actually getting. You can't expect to get your money back selling the car back to the dealer. I think 29k is fair going that route. If you want to get more, put in on Ebay or something. You could at least get into the low 30's.
Every car is different. Why? Different sellers, different buyers. I'll tell you though that we just bought a 2001 S2000 Yellow w/ 2K miles for $29,000. We thought that was a good deal. I was actually going to keep this one for myself, but I couldn't wait the extra week and I got a brand new one. (2 Days ago). They were getting the car for me, but now that I have mine, they were going to stock it. Nope, it's already sold, and it's not even here yet. Just to give you an idea of where these cars are right now in the market. Also, the cars ARE selling for over MSRP at Manheim. (This rarely happens). It's also happening with the Lexus SC-430 and the New M3.
Not only are the resale prices not vaild two states away they aren't even valid in a single state (or maybe it's just true in a state the size of Texas). When I was shopping for mine I couldn't get a car with less than 8K miles in Austin for less than 33.5K but I was able to purchase my black/red 2000 in Dallas (2 1/2 hours away) with 6500miles for 29K from a dealer (and I saw similiar deals in the Houston area)! Selling any used car should follow the same way as buying. Shop your car around.
Any buyers in Austin want to buy a 2000 black/red with 13.5K miles for 33K?

I got my yellow 2001 s2k for msrp almost 3 months ago. Kelly blue book still prices a used S2000 at above msrp like 36k. I don't think you can find a buyer for this much, but would insurance have to pay this? if it was totaled or stolen?? i'm cuious about that.
S2Krazy: does having a hard top add any value?? I bought the hardtop for myself, not for extra re-sale value, but am curious. I think S2000 with Hardtops are fairly rare, especially a yellow one. Any experience dealing with yellow hardtopped S2K's?

I think dealers do pay good money for used S2000s. But I don't know why anyone would want to buy a used. 12,000km ones sell for around $2000-2500CDN off MSRP of new ones. Unless you really want one and can't afford the extra 2000-2500CDN.
