Arrow Do all AP1s have Kangarooing (or Hopping) ?

I'm currently in the market for an AP1 ('02 or '03) and I was wondering if all AP1s have the symptoms of kangarooing or bunny hopping or jumping or shaking when going into 1st gear, starting from a stop (or in stop and go traffic).

In a test drive of one 2002, I got the hopping two or three times within a half an hour of driving. Normal, or? An easy fix, or should I move on?

I've read all the big threads on this--the problem seems really widespread in the UK. I've read xvipers thoughts that it's driving technique. I've read someone else's thoughts that you need to move your foot against the carpet so you won't oscillate due to the firm suspension and cause the kangarooing, etc. I've read that it could be a map sensor, IAC valve, heat bog, etc.

Is there a consensus? Facts?

Thanks in advance!

Mine hardly ever does that but once it starts, I just push the clutch in again, and then let off again and it completely goes away. You I did map whack and it didn't do it for a long time after that. Its been like 6 months or so since its done that to me, and I daily drive mine. I do hear that is very common though.

You can start right everytime and it could still do that...It can be other problems like the map sensor and stuff causing the problem. the MAP Whack cured mine mostly even though it rarely ever happened.

i thought if you engage the gear wrong the synchro has a hard time and it causes it to hop,

so i just reclutch and move to 2nd and it wont happen again.
mine only did it once or twice and i drive a LOT >_<

he's talking about the weird idle-cathing problem. Mine has it, I drive around it. I dont think its avoidable unless you like going into neutral often.

Hopping like that is all driver error. Usually it's caused by letting off the clutch too quickly or dropping it just as it's about to fully engage while not giving the engine enough rpms to engage smoothly from a stop in 1st gear. this happens frequently on low torque cars with inexperienced drivers or drivers used to more low end torque.

It can be due to driving technique or a bad sensor. I've had my 03 for a while and this has never happened to me, however I used to have a GSR ek hatch with a bad idle air and fast idle thermal valve and it bucked like crazy.
