Do California S2000s have different emmissions?
Can i license an out-of-state S2000, or if I should buy a California-ized model..

Thanks in advance, for any advice!

I can't be absolutely sure but every time I've looked up parts there's only one engine code that shows. Hence, I *believe* there's only one engine certified for all states. Come to think of it, I'm in NY which requires the same emissions as CA and there's nothing unique in our cars...

It's a LEV so it should be ok. I bought mine in Maryland and moved to California a year ago and had no issues at all with registering it. All you'll need is to pass emissions and pay your extortion fees and you'll be good to go.

I believe the S2000's engine is a "zero emissions" or near "zero emissions" engine. Ergo, its engine is acceptable in all states.

Thanks guys.

There wasnt some additional fee for an out of state vehicle right ? Just the regular registration extortion?

How painful would it be to drive an S 750 miles ?
Im thinking it might be kind of fun across the wide open west ..

You mean "low emissions" aka LEV.

Just a factoid, the S2000 engine is now one of the "dirtier" engines out in new cars today.

I've taken mine on week-long trips with my wife and found it noisy but fun. The fun part definitely outranks the noise...

There's no out of state fee but you do have to have a car go through emissions simply due to the fact that it was purchased out of state. If it was bought in CA I think you have until year sixto get it smogged. Pretty nice deal. The DMV website is surpringly helpful too but probably so that we have no excuses that "we didn't know" good luck!

I believe the CA DMV rule is that a new car bought in the state is exempt from smog checks for 6 years. A used car less than 4 years old bought in the state is exempt, otherwise the seller must provide a smog certificate before the car can be registered by the new owner. A car brought into the state must pass a smog check to register in state regardless of age. The CA DMV web site is at:
