Well, I just tried 3 of the options under Edit Options, and I think I like them. They are:

Show user's signatures in their posts? yes no
Show user's avatar in their posts? yes no
Show image attachments and [img] code in Posts?

The threads look a helluva lot cleaner now - I think I like it like this.
Too bad it doesn't get rid of the other banner, under some users avatar though.

I agree with the thread topic though, restrictions need to be put in place. It should be fairly easy to place some technical (code mods) restrcitions in place fairly quickly. i.e. limit the HTML form field that the signature is in to 5 lines, or maximum characters. Write or modify a backend script that verifies file size and dimensions. This can be done with a php or perl script that calls ImageMagick's mogrify command. It could automatically resize all signature pics to certain dimensions and DPI.

I'd say implement technical restrictions and the discussion is over...like it or leave it.

I'll be glad to help with the code mods too if needed.

cthree,

I agree totally with you and Greg. Why don't you start a Poll on this and anchor it to the top of the S2000 Talk forum? The poll choices would reflect how limited posts signatures and avatars should be. The avatars with motion are neat but don't these slow the loading of threads? Moonpie has some good ideas along the lines of definite limits in the code. You can get voluntary compliance by some members but after a while we tend to drift back to our old habits.

is there a way to avoid ezcodes or certain vB codes only to be used in sigs? this might be part of the solution. if 'img' code could not be used then we will have solved the issue of large pictures in sigs while keeping text and hyperlinks.

the other issue would be the 20 lines of junk that people feel they need to post on their sigs.

Do people think that my sig is too big?

I agree with this and am willing to reduce the size of mine if necessary....

What really bugs me is the 3 or 4 people who have a long line of pictures as the sig. It is not so much the download time, but the fact that you then need to scroll across the page to read the message....... I really find this a PITA!

Also, on a similar subject, is there anyway to stop pics being automatically repeated in when someone does a "quote" reply? I am sure that if the default was not to copy the pic into there, then a lot of the people replying wouldn't bother adding the pic in manually..... just a thought.....

As someone who does have junk in his signature, I'd be interested in feedback. I did remove a picture I had before, and have tried to limit it to 5 lines or less ... but that's hard to determine since view widths vary.

So, I know my sig is a bit over the top ... but is it too much? As for a reason why one might want to list mods, I list mine as an appriciative "ad" for the makers, rather than as self-fluffing.

Also, I'd be happy to only show my sig once per thread ... but I can't find an option for this (I just looked once again since it was meantioned again in this thread).

I think that if you could disallow IMG usage, and limit the size (in bytes) of the signature entry box (should be easy in the form) it might go a long way.
