Also, for everyones reference, especially xviper who asked, if you uncheck the "show signature" box it only affects that post and none of the others that you have already posted.....

lane and tokyo's sigs are fine, but if you felt that each one of those little mods needed its very own line, and then added a 500KB image, well... that's what my eyes are getting tired of.

Duh! I just noticed that you can uncheck "display signature" when posting! But, I doubt I'll remember to use it regularly.

If this button's state could be set via an check box in a users options area, and that option defaulted to "off", then most people would not show their signature by default. For the rest of us, it would be easier that way to only show it on the first post to a thread.

Cool...

Well, I knew that I could turn off signatures, but I was hoping for a better solution - responsible use of them. Several folks of late think that it's cool to have huge files in their sigs...when it's really a PITA as TJ said that is forces you to scroll sideways to see the post.

There is a solution...just hoping to find one that works. I'm sure that C3 can either finesse the code himself or have someone else do it to accomplish that...I was just hoping to shed a little light on this annoyance...

And Merry Christmas to you, too!

Thanks for your kind responses, not a condemnation in the bunch. I personally voted against removing pics from sigs because I think they can express a great deal about the member, they can be creative and personal. But, and I'm not alone in this, there is an imaginary line between creativity and excess. We are talking about a few extremes here, 98% of the sigs are perfectly fine. All I'm really asking is that if I or one of the other admins asks you to change it that you comply. It's not personal, it's just necessary to achieve peace and prevents drastic actions on our part. All of the sigs in this thread so far are excellent examples of modest signatures.

There is currently no option to disable club badges because we haven't got to it yet. I just wanted to get it going to help the clubs promote themselves. It's not 100% complete yet.

When you post and uncheck the show signature box it only effects that post.

If you really want to show your mods then you are welcome. I think Greg is refering to what seems like an endless list. Using a small font and scrunching it down so it doesn't consume the whole page is a great way to do this.

I like to add two more annoying things to the list:
1) flashing / animated graphics and banners - they are very distracting when you just try to focus to read the posts. (The American flag one is subtle enough so it is OK in my book)
2) spam posts in the Group Buy and For Sales Forum - I am tired of scrolling and sorting through a monitor full of threads that are "top" daily by the original poster.
I am just referring to one person here.
Nothing wrong w/ advertising your products, but please do so w/ courtesy - like consolidating all the products in one thread.

Stop with the "in-your-face" advertising! I already get enough of it from highway billboards to TV commercials to spam e-mails.

Excellent thread.
The only grumble I have is the sigs which are too wide for the page, they are a big pain to read properly and more often than not I tend to ignore what is written as it gets so annoying.
With a fast connection, I am luckier than most.

cthree,

How do you only include your sig only once in a thread??? Is there an option for this that I missed.

Mine is 14KB... and hypnotic. If that's too large, let me know and I'll remove it although I'm rather fond of it.

I checked to see how large a new thread is. Without posts a new thread is about 175KB. The banners rotate, so this number will vary. Still, this is rather large by dialup standards (@35 seconds at 5KB per sec (56k)). Can any of the images be optimized?

Also, both Internet Explorer and Nutscrape have options for removing images. Maybe this is a fix for the slowness problem.

I agree with Greg about the extremely wide sig's. I vote that they shouldn't be more than 300 pixels wide.
