Default Does anyone skip gears when just cruising?

Most of the time I really don't mind how often I have to shift because the ratios are so close together (with the S2000 gearbox, it's a joy), but occassionally I feel conservative and skip gears. I go from 1st to 3rd to 5th and wonder if everyone ever does this. Does anyone see any downside to doing this? Would some of the syncros wear more than others?

Me personally, on my '04 model? No!

There have been "many" conversations about doing this and the general opinion of the forum is that it's not a good thing to do because of adverse wear and tear on the synchros. As you pointed out, the S2000's tranny is so sweet, why bother.

I do the same thing every now and then. 1st... 3rd... 5th. Sometimes 4th to 6th. I don't think it really saves (or hurts) anything, but just a change from bangin' gears through VTEC.

I do the 3rd to 5th in my V6 Tacoma all of the time. Rarely do I use 4th gear.

Possibly if this practice was done constantly... maybe... Once in a while I doubt there's an issue with the gearbox.

I've done this with most of my five speed sports cars and never had a problem. Most of my cars have been 100K plus in mileage.

It will not harm your gearbox. Most LS1 powered cars that are equipped with the T56 transmission come with a "Skip Shift" feature stock. It blocks out 2nd gear and eases the shifter into 4th. The powerful nature of the motor can handle the low RPMs. This is however an incredibly annoying feature and the first thing to be removed.

Skipping gears will improve your gas milage.

Skipping gears is a bad idea. The harm to the gearbox is clearly explained in past threads. Do a search and you will be enlightened.

I use to skip gears, occasionally, until I read on this site that I could damage my syncromeshers (syncronizers). Thank you fellow S2K members for educating me about the problems that I might have otherwise created with this misguided habit.

don't compare a s2000 tranny to a t56. woodwork, a honda engineer, has even confirmed that skipping gears on this tranny will increase wear and tear on the synchros.
