Does anyone skip gears when just cruising?
Let me enlighten some of you.

Oh... and woodwork is also a honda engineer. He might know what he's talking about.
This tranny is designed differently than most trannies. Two things were done in the design to "ensure an exhilarating and quick shifting performance that meets the drivers spirited operation".
1) Normal manual transmissions have a gear reduction prior to transmitting the power to the gear selection, thus reducing the rotational speed of the gears and shafts and synchros. The S2000 transmission has the gear reduction after the gear selection. Thus the gears and shafts and synchros have a higher rotational speed. So skipping gears will be harder on the synchros of this transmission than most.
2) The S2000 transmission was designed to keep the number of number of synchro cones to a minimum. "It is impossible to ensure gear-shift exhilaration only by increasing the synchromizer capacity through the use of a multi-cone, because the shift knob load is not reduced to a satisfactory level".
The engineering of this transmission put a higher emphasis on exhilarating feel and quick performance rather than making it bulletproof (and I'm glad they did).
Quotes are from SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) Technical Notes "Development of a new six-speed manual transmission", by K. Kitajima, Engineering Development Department 4, Honda R&D.

I cant believe its bad to skip gears. I know Im gonna get reamed for this, but I skip gears a lot, and usually more than just 3rd to 5th, etc. I like going fast, but considering that...
A. the highest speed limit around where I live is 55 and
B. the S can do 55 in 2nd
...I often shift from 2nd to 6th on 55mph limited roads or from 1st to 4th on 35mph roads. I like V-tech'n but I dont wanna go 150 mph, and I cant imagine going to 3rd to 4th to 5th to 6th for what seems like no reason. How much will not skipping gears really save on the synchro? I dont plan on driving this car until it has 100k miles. Its an '02 with 20k right now and Im sure I'll have a new car within 2 years, (whether it be a newer S or not).
If Im not supposed to skip gears, do you suggest that I go through all the gears in a situation like I've described above?

Nategta, is that you can't read the information above, that you can read but not understand it, or that you choose not to believe it? If the latter, why do you believe that you are more qualified than the engineers to judge an engineering matter?
Also, if you don't believe the knowledgable posters who've opined that skipping gears is bad, then why are you asking for more opinions on the matter -- is it that you will believe opinions provided that they comport with the ones you already hold, and you want validation for a view you will refuse to change?

Oh please, enlighten us on what you should do if you are say, winding out 3rd a bit, then look down and go damn, I'm a bit over the speed limit, I should just back off a bit.
Do you really think that you should shift to 4th for a moment then clutch again for 5th? I would think that a rev matched shift into any gear appropriate for the speed would be the right move and most gentle for the drivetrain.
I seriously doubt that skipping a gear is a recipe for disaster especially if you are rev matching reasonably.

Believe what you want, think what you will. Facts are facts and the jury has been in on this alot longer than the 128 days you have been here.
Shrike, I didn't mean "I cant believe its bad to skip gears" so literally, like: I DO NOT BELIEVE THAT. I meant it in surprise and disbelief that here I have been skipping gears like crazy for the last 2 months. I have read and understand everything I've read perfectly, I am simply asking what should be done instead of shifting from 2nd to 6th in the situation I have described.
Also, I'll assume that you were being extremely rude because you misunderstood my post, but the reason I has asked the question was because I want to know if people (or "Honda Engineers") suggest that I go thru all the gears even though in the end I should be in 6th. And I did not want to hear a response such as "dont drive like that" because driving like that is the reason I bought this car.

It's things like this that cause people to have problems with their gears after some miles get on their car. Or some even sooner than later. This can cause grinding, resistance going into gears, etc.
Is it really that much of a pain in the butt to take the extra 1-2 seconds to simply go through the other gears quickly, rather than skip shift? All you have to do is go to the next gear, let the clutch out for a split second, then shift to the next gear, wash rinse repeat. It's not worth saving the extra second or two just to skip from 3rd to 6th.
