Default Does the A/C draw HP from the motor when not in use?

A friend was telling me the A/C draws a substantial amount of HP to run. I new it required a little, but wasn't sure how much. Also, does it only draw power while on, or while its off as well? And.... if somebody knows the link to the steps to removing the AC, plz let me know. Thnx,

Brandon

The A/C compressor is driven by a pulley that engages and disengages by an electromagnetic clutch assembly. When the A/C is not in use the serpentine belt only turns the pulley which free wheels - minimal power drain.
The A/C system consists of the compressor, the condenser (which is built into the radiator), the dryer/receiver (which is that cylinder you see in front of the rad), the evaporator (which is built into the heater core box that's inside the dash) and all the assorted piping for the refrigerant.
You would have to evacuate the refrigerant and properly dispose of it. Then you can remove the compressor, however, you will need to find new way to route a new belt. The receiver/dryer can also then be removed along with all the visible piping. The evaporator removal might prove to be a somewhat more elaborate task. All you would be doing by removing this stuff is to save weight. If you never turn the A/C on, you will not have any noteworthy power drain.
Are you trying to save weight or are you worried that even an A/C that is NOT turned on is drawing too much power from the engine? How much money, time and effort are you willing to expend to save a few pounds?

Well, i'm already spending a considerable amount of money, in terms of what i have and whats on the way. I'm trading my HKS for a spugen Ti N1. I ordered a DC header..., not the best, but it weighs less. Big brake kit within the month to replace the front mastergrade rotors. Lightweight odessy battery. Injen intake. Remove the spare and toolkit. Remove the windshield cleaning system... resevoir and all. Lastly and most audatiosly, remove the front and rear steel underbumpers and try to replace them with sufficient self fabricated lighter parts. Add removing the AC to that and i should be around 200lbs or more lighter. As for the AC, i've heard you can save anywhere from 20-50lbs, depending on how much you remove. Add the heater, and the total is 60lbs. Correct?? Also, whats your opinion on the bumpers.... crazy?? All of the above ...should... be done within 1-2months. Not listed are the performance upgrades....! I'm trying to keep the car livable and also make it considerbly more sporty than it came, which is by no means an easy task. When i heard a tricked out spoon S2000 pulled 1.15 lateral G's, i started a quest.....!!!! I want to hit 1.01 g's, and i'll be a happy guy

Isn't 1.01 g's easily attainable without removing all that weight? I would think you can accomplish that with a good set of coilovers and better tires (R-compound).

Sounds about right. Well, i'm at .99g's right now, according to my apex RSM. All of this weight reduction plus some swaybars and an xbrace should get me to 1.05. Reasonable?

I can see now that you are a man on a mission. Sorry, I can't give you any links on how to remove the A/C system but a Helm manual will give you what you need to know.
