dang, dont you just hate it when the girlfriend steps in between you and your car? haha

does she know you have money saved up laying around for the hardtop? if she does then she should be considerate and hold off on the dog since she KNOWS you've BEEN SAVING for it. but then again, she can hold off on "other" things too

A yorkie? Goddam, it's like underwear. The smaller it is the more it costs.

Here are some options to ponder.

1.) Get the hardtop and the dog and drop the girlfriend ... unless, of course, the girlfriend is more attractive than the dog.

2.) Girlfriends will come and go, but a good dog and an OEM hardtop will be your companions for life ... at least a lifetime in dog years.

3.) Take a deep breath and think of it this way ... would it be better if she stuck around for life (you know, a really lot of people years)? Hell, she'll probably want a cat next and she never liked that cramped little two-seat car anyway.

4.) The dog could guard your seats, but the dog will probably pee on your tires too.

5.) The OEM hardtop will protect your seats from theft, but it blocks most of the road noise so you'll have to listen to your girlfriend talk about her day at work while you're driving.

Good luck with your cost-to-benefit analysis. It seems like every decision has some trade-offs.

IMO that much money for ANY dog is a bit extreme. I'd suggest getting a dog from the pound. Sure they are mutts (though not all are) but mutts are great. Unwanted dogs need a home as well. So rather than putting down almost a grand for a Yorkie, tell her to do the right thing and save an unwanted animal's life.

One of the best pets I've ever had is my current cat. My girlfriend found her in a barn and she's wonderful. Again, you shouldn't have to put up that much money when far less could get a far superior pet.

Most likely the girlfriend will want a yorkie rather then some dog from the pound. In any case your best bet would be to look at puppies from local breeders. The dogs from breeders are usually cheaper and superior to the dogs that you will find in a pet store. Check your newspaper and local ads such as penny saver.

Every breed has a rescue organization with dogs taken in from the pound, abandoned, given up, whatever. When we got our Keeshond the rescue place was boarding like 20 dogs. We spent a couple hours there getting to know them, picked one with a friendly, mellow personality and took him home. Already housetrained, still plenty young (18 months at the time,) has been absolutely wonderful. Really a great solution if you don't have the time/patience/desire to deal with puppy training, chewing, etc. Cost is only like $100 to cover shots.

So you get the breed you want without the cost, and an unwanted dog gets a home at the same time.

Just Google "yorkie rescue."

I agree with the above. Rescue a dog from a shelter instead of paying for an animal that some other rich slob is going to buy anyway. Paying $900 for a dog is ridiculous, but that's what my brother-in-law does, as well as many other idiots. A dog is not merely an extension of your personality. It's not an accessory. A dog should be your partner and friend with a mind of it's own.

Check this story out, my friend bought a Yorky for his gf at the time for $1,500. After she cheated on him, the sad part is he still had to make payments on that dog. (Yes, he made payments on a dog)
