I think your right. They are called "oversized" bolts or "plugs" and are specifically for stripped oil pans, transmissions and differentials.

the other option is to pull the diff and take it someplace to be tapped.

Well unfortunetly I have found out that the service will be done and I can't go back oh well, I'm just going to keep my other casing and sell it.....so if anyone wants to buy a 2002 casing pm me.

They want to charge him $550 to do a tap. I think you could do it without taking it out or just use one of those filler bolts

That's just bullcrap. They're trying to penalize you for doing your own work so they can charge you $70 to do 10 minutes of work in changing the diff fluid from now on.

People don't know better they assume that the right way to fix this is to get a new housing. Gotta have 100x more of a chance that something will go wrong then with just tapping it. A$$holes, they are blacked balled!
