door height & resting your arm on it
Absolutely do not base your purchase on door height!!!
The S2000 is an obsession, if you are already questioning the car this may not be true love. However if the only thing anyone can complain about is door height then that makes the S2K 99% perfect, hmmm sounds like a good purchase.
FYI - I'm 5' 11" and I can rest the edge of my elbow on the edge of the door, but it is not low and comfy like the Miata. I test drove every sports convertible and the S2K in my opinion is the best in reliability, total cost of ownership, style, and "race car for the street" technology.
You be the judge but forget about door height.

If you're concerned about the door being too high, buy a Maiata. But then you'll look more like you're on the car instead of in it.
6'1" here, not so comfy resting my arm on the door.
my left hand (or both hands) is/are on the wheel all the times anyway. (is that what you are suppose to do?
)
how about adjusting the radio with your left hand while you are driving with your left hand!
There are advantages for sitting in a car ...
if you are sitting in a car, you are wearing the car as a protection ...
if you are sitting on a car, now the car is wearing you as a protection!

I'm your height and am able to rest my arm on the door, but not very comfortably. If you really need to rest your arm somewhere, the better place to do it is by the door handle.
As far as how far you'll stick out of the car, I'd say you can see my upper chest, shoulders and head.

I'm 6'1" with a 33-34" inseam, and it's uncomfortable to rest my arm on the door sill. I can do it, but it is not the most comfortable position. When sitting in the car, all that can be seen is my head and a little bit of my shoulders.
Like acx said, don't base your purchase on the door height. Who cares what other people think you look like in the car (unless all you want to do is profile)? You're buying the car for how it drives, how it feels, and most importantly, the fun factor.
Personally, I think it looks worse when you see so much of a person's body above the door sill. It makes them look like they're too big for the car. And if you look at any high performance sports car and the people driving them, all you can see is basically their head.
