Down shifting to decrease speed

I just read on S2ki that down shifting to decrease your speed is bad for your car. Is that true? I am not talking about dropping from 5th to 2nd, just walking down the gears to control speed.

you are not doing anything wrong... just a bit more expensive. (more expensive to replace engine or tranny damage than to replace brakes). but this car is about fun, not about cost! (but if you want to keep the cost down, use the brakes more and the engine less for braking).
