Driving RPMs?

I have always been wondering, which gear is the proper gear to drive in, at which speeds? More city driving I am talking about. I have never owned an import car in my life until this one, and so I dont have many ideas on which gear is best, or if the higher gears will hurt the engine cause its working too hard.
Typically, 3-4K for me.

I have read this before, and tried it for 4-5 tanks of gas... got consistently 2-3mpg less cruising around 3.5 and shifting in the 4-5 range than cruising in the 2.5-3 range and shifting in the 3.5-4 range.
I consistently get 25 - 28 mpg driving to work and around town and 30-33 mpg all highway at 70 mph in 6th gear.

Well it depends on your average speeds. For instance there is no need to keep the rpms over 3,000 if you are just driving in town in traffic at speeds under about 40mph. When I'm in town and don't need to accelerate I am typically cruising around 2,500rpms at 25-35mph, also when going faster but going down a hill I will shift in to 6th gear even at 45 mph, downshift to keep the rpms above 3,500 anytime I go up a hill.
