oh yea also what speed do guys shift when comming to a stop, i mean downshift.

ie. i hit into 3rd when the car reaches 25 mph and 2nd at 10mph and 1st at 5-8 mph.

not into nuetral, you have to downshift.

question 1) whatever gear that keeps the rpm at a steady 2000-2500 rpm. below 2000, you're lugging the motor.

question 2) downshifting into 1st just to slow is overkill. if im in 6th gear, i go to 4th than 3rd while pressing the brakes. than i push in the clutch and only slow down using the brakes.

emrillive, you are driving an '04, so some of the advice from those of us with 2.0 Litre motors will be a tad bit off for you.

When I am cruising at 40 MPH I am usually in third, but ready to drop into second

When I am downshifting to slow down, I basically do the same thing as Razor.

If you are truly 'cruising' at a steady speed, with no acceleration, the optimal gear for economy is 5th. From the manual (yes, these things are in there), you would shift up to 6th gear at a cruising speed of 42mph. 5th is at (I believe) 35mph.

On the downshift, if I'm driving aggressively, I'll double clutch down to 3rd at 45-50 mph. I have done 2nd as well from that speed, but only on days that I think I'm michael schumacher and braking late.

Putting at 40 = 5th gear
Cruising at 40 = 4th gear
Driving at 40 = 3rd gear
Racing at 40 = 2nd gear

Downshifting to a stop (from freeway speeds) = 4th gear down to 55mph, 3rd gear to 40mph, and 2nd gear the rest of the way (pressing in the clutch for the last 10mph. No need for 1st gear downshifts.

With the downshift numbers you originally posted, you might actually push the car instead of slow it. Your speeds are too low for the gears you wanted to help. By the time your down to 25mph, I would be in 2nd. Basically adjust your gear selections down by one and you'll be about right.

I usually keep the rpms at about 3500 to 4000, ive found that its better for gas mileage. when i was breaking the car in and not goin over 2500 in each gear she ate up gas way too quick!
