Default Dry shifting

If the weather can cooperate, we will soon have a '04 Rio in the garage.

I have a 13yo who is nuts about cars. He obviously can't legally drive yet, so he wants to sit in the drivers seat and "get the feel" of shifting by rowing the lever through the gears.

My question is will he do any damage by shifting thru the gears w/o the engine running?

He would have the clutch depressed, by my feeling is there maybe a lubrication issue w/o the engine running.

I don't want to rain on his parade, but I also don't want to take out the tranny either.

Thanks for your input

Regards,
Frank

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but I can't see that it would hurt anything. I've done it a few times in my car for fun or to demonstrate the throw to a friend.

I wouldn't worry about it.

One of my friend's friend's moms just bought an '04 Berlina. when the mom picked up her daughter(My friend's friend, who are both still in high school) my friend asked to sit in it, so the mom let her...and then the mom flipped out when she did exactly that. they ran to me to advise them, and I said I see absolutely no way you could damage the transmission by doing this, clutch engaged or disengaged (assuming the motor is off). I hope I'm not wrong...

(BTW, I advised the mom to get a 350Z roadster, because I, being an S2000 elitist, didn't think she'd enjoy it as it was meant to be enjoyed...ie, she bitched about how it didn't have a folding hardtop or a tonneau like the Z4's. *sigh* I was right, but at least she's anal about it and will keep it nicely, so maybe someone will be able to enjoy it when she's done.)
