Default manual trans question

i know this sounds odd.

when you are in any gear and let the gas go, the car will slow down near 2000 rpms. then you feel a sort of kick and release, but the revs are still above idle. the trans is still connecting the wheels to the engine. what is the kick and release and is it bad for the car?

SOunds like reverse loading to me.....instead of having the engine driving the gears, the inertia of the wheels are rotating the gears, which in turn rotates the crank, which in turn turns the engine over. I dont think there are any MAJOR problems with this. I dont like going that low in the RPM range because of stress on the gears (I usually just pop it out of gear and idle).

When it gets to a point of being too low ("training, lugging, chugga chugging")
the transmission is heating up, and quickly.

You never want to lug the motor. If you are climbing uphill, and are sitting at 1500rpms in 6th, within 1 mile, youll overheat your tranny.

Dont lug the s2000. It has no torque, and cannot be lugged like a Z06. Anything under 1700rpm in the first 3 gears is lugging, and anything under 2000 or so in 4th and 5th, never go under 2500 in 6th.

. Those are pretty much the lowest RPM's I ever go to. I try to avoid back-loading (or reverse loading).

Besides the 2000 rpm thing, what is your vehicle speed when this happens? What gear are you in?

Lugging is relative. For example, if you're coasting downhill on a gentle grade without accelerating, it's OK to go below these numbers. It will give you better gas mileage. But you don't want to have the RPM too low under load, like accelerating or going uphill.

But doesn't the inertia of the wheels rotate the gears when you are in gear but not accelerating, even at higher rpms?...
