End of the road for me.
I have to say, I have enjoyed being an s2000 owner for the last month. I think I will have to sell my car in the next two weeks.
Everything was perfect, the deal, the interest rate, the extended warantees, I even found the perfect car insurance quote with American Express.
Today when I called to check and see if they had recieved my "follow up" information, they told me I would be dropped January 2nd. Why? Because of a DUI? NO speeding ticket? NO
Because I was previously insured by Progressive and I made an insurance claim two years ago for a kicked off side view mirror.
I was baffled.... to be branded because of a "high risk" insurance company. Not to mention the stupid mirror. I even qualified for the six year no accident discount with Amex. I had one speeding ticket for ten over (speed trap), which I mentioned as I got a quote. I must have asked him ten times "so you are sure I will get this rate"... Yep. I even told the guy about my previous insurer. Apparently, there are high and low risk versions of the under writing.
Well, I am in a high risk demographic with a scarlet letter (progressive). I guess I can buy a grocery getter now. Perhaps a maxima or 1980 celica will do. I really wish the sales rep would have told me I could get dropped in a month like this.
In summary..........
Insurance quote: $2000 year
Then dropped cold. Now I cant afford the car (well, I could but this is getting ridiculous) with $3200+ quotes from progressive and gieco.
Insurance companies: legal extortion.

Ask Progressive if the quote is with the uninsured motorist rider. This rider can just about double your rate and if you live in an insurance required state your chances are very low of ever having to use this option. (It's for the driver of the other car not having ins. not as some have said for an uninsured driver driving your car.) my rate went from 1100 every six months to 800 something if I made installment payments 680 if I just paid it
at renewal.

I don't think the "online quotes" are ever very good, from my experience. I seriously think you can do much much better than $3,200 per year if you shop harder. You have to call every insurance company you can think of. The rates vary so much from one company to another FOR NO LOGICAL REASON. Don't assume just because you checked 3 or 4 that you have a feeling for the market. Just keep trying and you'll match that Amex quote again, or better it.
How old are you? Is this the only car you're insuring, or is it a second car? Is there anyway you can get it insured for "pleasure use only?" That would help a lot.

Contact Wawanesa. They will cut your rate in half. I found out about them from the Bat Area folks on this site. Everyone was raving about them. They are a GREAT company...awesome customer service and reasonable rates.
sorry to hear about your dilemna.
i highly recommend you do a little research before selling the car, however. you're gonna take a bath on a car that you've only owned 1 month and think about all the $ in tax, license, and registration you just paid (not to mention will have to pay again on any other car you buy). Just food for thought.
And yes, car insurance is an absolute racket. I'm not sure how Delaware is but in CA, car insurance is a legal requirement. Unfortunately, this has made it a license to steal. Moreover, the problem is worsened by the sizable minority of drivers in CA without insurance that absolute screw those of us that follow the law when they ram their jallopies into our cars.
Argh!

Bummer!!!!!!!! I agree, car insurance is a major scam, but I also agree that some more research could result in a much better rate. Possible getting on another family member's insurance could help. We put our vehicles on with our home owners insurance and I pay $950 a year.
