I was eating crap one day thinking I was all cool. I reved to about 4k but instead of dropping the clutch I let it out, slowly. The engine started reving higher but the car was going forward slowly. I engaged the clutch again and took it easy. At the time I didn't know what happend but a few seconds later there was a horrible smell coming from the car... (Burnt clutch) It was nasty.
Chalk it up to lack of experience.
I don't think I glazed it but it hasn't been to happy since then. It's an 02, I got it used and I don't know how well the person before me drove the car and how much stress he put on the clutch disk.

bringing this back.

I drop the clutch at 5k, Wheel spin and the rpm drops to like 3.5k.

drop the clutch at 6k , wheel spin rpm drops to 4k. This is a drop clutch launch at full throttle. So what is the deal with it dropping so low of a rpm at a drop clutch. During the wheel spin is when i notice the rpm drop.

conclusion: I think i need to launch at 5500 rpm with riding the clutch a little until i get full traction then let go of the clutch and go full throttle.

anyone have issue with this. "my02"

err... there is a point in how you drop the clutch, too.

Ok, to put this out there since no one has mentioned it yet and I want to avoid any more diff replacement threads, here's a thought.

Any attempt at a quick launch where you "drop the hammer" without feathering the clutch will cause wear. If you do NOT break traction, you are creating a LOT of snap on your drivetrain. This is what leads to premature differential damage.

So, to sum it up:

6k launch while dropping the clutch=Burning of tread life on the tires.
6k launch while feathering the clutch=Burning of clutch life if not glazing.
<6k launch while dropping the clutch=No tire spin causing the gearing to snap into place and possible premature diff damage.
<6k launch while feathering the clutch=Well...isn't this a normal start anyway?

<Stupid Music from those lame commercials>

The more you know!

that i already know

Im asking why the rpm drop.

for this "6k launch while dropping the clutch=No tire spin causing the gearing to snap into place and possible premature diff damage"

thats why you dont put slicks on the s2k.

I do have other cars i drag at the track, and would want to bring my s2k to the drag strip and test it out. Please dont post "s2k is not a drag car, its a autox car, blah blah blah. etc....

anyways back on topic.

In an aggressive launch (high rpm), if you don't drop the clutch, very likely you will burn the clutch a little. Hmm.....that wonder smell

If you do drop the clutch, your differential is gonna take a beating.

Either way, our car was not designed for launch like that.

Good luck!

i think thats is why the rpm drop when i launched it. Who knows, how many guys are willing to abuse their s2k, to even try a high launch.

car is completely stock by the way.
