Engine Check Light On !!! WTF !!! HELP !!!
If you put gas in the day before and did not put the gas cap on squarely or turned it enough clicks, it is possible that it took this long for the CEL to come on. Once on, it takes several driving cycles for it to reset "itself" if that was what the problem was. As long as the CEL is NOT flashing, it is OK to drive it. The ECU won't let you do anything it doesn't want you to. If it's FLASHING, don't drive it.
If you suspect it could have been the gas cap, then reset as already mentioned. If it wasn't the gas cap, it will most likely come back on.
There are many sensors on this car and it is easy of one of them to give a bad signal. Sometimes, it's a true condition, sometimes it's due to a loose or dirty connection, sometimes a sensor can go bad. Only a scanner can pull the code and tell you where the problem might be. If you have no scanner, the dealer is the only other place to go.

Most CEL problems are minor polution control problems. I think the CEL has to be flashing for it to be impending disaster. Get an OBDII scanner and find out what the CEL is indicating or have your dealer do it for you.
