Engine getting louder...
I just did my first oil change recently and I am about to come up to 4,000 miles and it seems to me my engine is louder then it was before I got my oil change. I changed to synthetic oil. Maybe I am wrong in thinking it was caused by the oil change but I noticed it a day or so after my oil change. Any imput on the matter would be great. Thanks
this is irrelevent but if i remember correctly, you switched to synthetic too early...at least that is not what honda recommends(they suggest waiting at least 10k miles before doing the switch).
I switched to Amsoil 7500W synthetic oil at 3300 miles and my engine got noticebly quieter and smoother (not as raucous). When the RPM's wind down you can hear a somewhat turbine like sound as well. On days with the top up and a low pressure weather system in the area (below 29.92 in), there is still a considerable amount of engine noise though. I love it!
I do notice the turbine sound... My honda dealer said to switch to synthetic when I brought it in so I did. What effects would I have cause by switching to early? I jsut kind of feel bad that I treat my car a little rough. I do get into VTEC almost every other day. Now that I have synthetic I thought I would be helping my engine. What could go wrong?
What can go wrong? I'm not too sure anything will go wrong, but I am definitely not an engineer. I have heard though that you should not switch to synthetic oil until the engine is fully broken in. The conventional break in oil allows the valves to seat properly, whereas the synthetic oil will not. If the valves do not seat properly, there is potential for oil blow by. This will cause increased oil consumption, smoke and decreased power. But as I said, this is just something a service manager at Toyota told me a few years ago when I wanted to switch from dyno to synthetic in my Tundra. I switched anyway and haven't had any trouble for 85K miles now. I've also read on this board that Honda doesn't recommend switching in the S until 10K miles. I have not seen that in writing from Honda though. So far, I'm extremely happy with the switch to synthetic in the S. I have 6600 miles now.
