Default First Oil Change?

I've got 2128 miles from september 01 and the dealer tells me to wait it out until 3k miles. I always thought you were supposed to change oil after break in, but maybe the oil it comes with is synthetic? I dont' believe this to be true because for break in i heard it's actually bad to use synthetic because there is TOO little wear and tear, so the piston rings aren't smoothed out and such. Anyone know if the oil change at 3k is just implemented so honda can save some cash or should i have changed it a WHILE ago. What i was thinking of doing is just changing out the oil i have right now, (not including the filter) and adding some new 10w-30 for the last 800 miles or so.

you sure follow what Honda said this time, the engine oil in the new car will help for protect the engine during break in. change it in around 3750 miles. after 7500miles or 10k miles then switch to synthetic engine oil.

Do a search for oil change there's all kinds of information on this. Basically wait till at least 3750 miles if you are severe service as defined by the owners manual. Wait till 7500 miles if normal service.

Use regular 10W/30 (NOT synthetic) oil for your first two oil changes. Change to synthtic oil after 10,000 miles if you want. Check your oil level at every gas fill-up and use regular 10W/30 oil for adds as needed. Change your filter when you change your oil. Use the Honda filter if you want, but in my opinion the Mobil 1 filter (MI-104 or MI-105) is a much better filter.

i agree with the others... i changed mine the first time after almost a year (and about 4,500 miles). the oil in your car is a "break-in" oil, so you want to give it a good chance to work. i just did my second oil change at about 6,000 miles (a year and a half). marks2k showed me how to do it (or maybe i should say he did it and i watched!)... easier than taking it to the dealer! i also agree that you should keep using dino oil for awhile and should check it regularly.

The OEM oil helps seat the rings....leave it in for 4-6K. You can go sythetic at 10k or when your cars stops buring oil which indicates the skirt seals are properly seated.

Read this update from last October on when to change oil, what grade of oil(10W-30), when to use synthetics, about the break in period and oil consumption. If your Honda dealer sells Honda motor oil, look at the label. You'll see that it is made by Mobil and it will probably their Drive Clean Oil petroleum based oil with a Honda lable on it. A number of people on this board also recommend Castrol GTX. Even if the oil is dark, I would still wait till about 5,000 miles because of the special break in additives.

I keep the factory oil in most of my Hondas till about 5000-7500 miles depending on how hard they are driven. That's based on feedback from factory engineers (not dealers).
