Default Is this an engine problem? Please give me your $.02

Hi, I just got a used S2000 (2002, 20K miles) and it seems that everytime I start it cold - if I rev it high, at around 6,000 it hesitates and won't go past 7,000 (similar to a fuel cutoff at redline) I then go easy on the engine and I let some time pass (maybe 15 seconds) If I try again, it works perfectly to 9,000

Is this some safety feature to prevent damage to the cold engine? Or is there a more serious problem.

Has anybody had this occur to them?

Thanks in advance to anybody that can provide me with some information or insights.

Take Care

I'm going to assume that this is not a troll so, welcome aboard. You cannot go past VTEC engangement on a cold engine. Your water temp gauge must be at 3 bars before you can, yes, it's a safety feature.

Thank You very much, I certainly feel much better!!I did not know this - I apologize for my ignorance on the matter -

Curious though - was there something in my post that was derogotory or insulting to make you think I might be trolling?

Thanks a lot for the info and good job on a great site! - well done.

Yeah, now I think about it - I am an idiot to be reving that high on a cold engine - hence your troll comment

The reason I was not cautious was was the I used to own a Integra GSR 6 years ago, that VTEC engine was ready to rev to 8,000 from a cold start (not the wisest thing to do in hindsight) but I was a stupid young lad.

I've driven a CL that has the VTEC engine as well (though totally different type of course) and that was ready to rev past the VTEC switchover immediately as well.

The S2000 is just a different beast - I realize that now - any other tips for making sure I don't blow the engine? I should wait for the 3 bars until I really juice it right?

Thanks again for all the help!!!

I would think it's not a bad idea to let the transmission and tires warm up also before trying any crazy antics out of your driveway... for safety reasons.

Oh yeah, congrats and enjoy the car.

changomo, there have been a few recent instances of people coming here, pretending to not know anything (no insult to you) and posting a question that could cause a negative reaction by the members. Along the lines of, "Dude, are you stupid!?"

Now, not actually knowing about it is a different story and I think at least half of the owners have hit the 6k cold engine limiter and did not known why the engine cut out. I have personally hit it twice, it's one of the worst feelings I've ever had in a car short of being in an accident. It's even worse when you've got a buddy with you and you're trying to show off a bit.

With that said, welcome aboard. How are things in RWC? I've been there a few times when E@H was still around.

3ngin33r1, no need to explain - I totally understand what your talking about - Car Boards seem to attract the worst trolls - I know what kind of behavior you describing. Thanks for your warm welcome, and keep up the good work!

I must say, I really thought something was busted on the S2000 when the Rev limiter kicked in - having this board really made me feel a whole lot better.

RWC is cool, not as hectic as the Dot Com days of course - E@H unforunately is not just an empty shell...
