I can't help thinking that the more protection you have the worse it is for you IF you get caught.

That's true. I had an Escort SR-7 and wanted to go with the 9500 integrated with my new car but couldn't justify the extra $500 just for it to be hidden.

Look on the ticket. By law he's required to indicate what method was used to determine your speed. The ticket will clearly show whether he used radar, lidar or paced you.

Your solo (or any radar detector) will not help you if he paces you. A radar/laser detector like the Passport 8500 and above, and Valentime units will tell you if he's using radar or laser. But understand, while the radar detection unit will give you advance warning of the presence of radar, the laser detection unit will tell you that you just got a ticket.

For the best protection, you need a radar/laser detector and a laser shifter/jammer unit. this will give you advance warning on radar, and prevent a reading on you if laser (lidar) is being used. Both of these give you time to slow down before getting to the officer's location. And you definitely want to slow down, because laser shifters have what's called a punch-through distance. This is the distance at which the lidar unit will be able to get an accurate reading on your speed.

You may also want to take a look at Trapster.com

Hope this helps.

The worse part of all of this was that I wasn't even having a good time (road was too straight and boring), just not thinking about speed.
that's the worst!

doesn't the solo cycle between on and off to save the batteries?
were the batteries fully charged or was the unit plugged in?

No cycle as far as I know and no way to plug it in.

I had just changed the batteries & the display showed full charge.

At this point it really doesn't matter bc I just got this:
Passport 9500xi

So far it's great!
