Default Estimate on new rear bumper/paint/labor?

I am going to the Property Damage Appraisers place today to get an estimate for my car (got rear-ended the other day). I will definitely need a new bumper, and at least a new ap2 exhaust tip. Don't know if there was any damage to the actual exhaust or behind the bumper.

What's a general estimate for a new rear bumper, paint, labor etc? Don't want to get low balled by the insurance people, and don't know if I can show up with some knowledge to help persuade them

An OEM rear bumper cover is $226, expect $300+ with shipping at Majestic Honda. Your local dealership will certainly charge closer to list price for the OEM part.

A decent paint & body shop will probably charge $3-500 to paint and install the new bumper cover.

The OEM tip is $59 at the same website:

Then the question is whether or not anything else behind the bumper cover was messed up. Were the mufflers damaged in any way?

It is hard to tell. My left exhaust tip is bent downwards but I don't think the actual exhaust is damaged. Hard to tell and I don't want to take it apart and look until the insurance guy looks at it today.

insurance companies can and will only write what they see. Therefore if there's any damage under the bumper, they won't write it. Also... insurance companies will write lower than a shop will, mostly because of the hourly rate difference.

Don't be alarmed though, pretty much all shops concede to Insurance rates.

Just be sure to take it to a reputable shop!!! Don't take it the the direct repair facility for the insurance company, as they do the work as quickly as possible, and alot of time wont follow the manufacture guidlines for the paint application.

Also, a reputable shop will fight for you, the customer, to get the job done correctly.

Once you get the car to the shop, and they get the bumper off, they'll call in what's called a supplement for additional damage. The appraiser will then come back to out to reinspect the car, and then approve whatever needs to be done.

No need to persuade them... a good shop will get what needs to be done, done, and get more money for a good repair.

Good luck!

An estimate I got in November for a rear bumper cover plus taillight replacement, including labor and repainting, was $1100. About $300 was the taillight, so figure about $800 for just the bumper parts/labor/painting.
