Before anyone asks I first changed the oil at 600-miles with Mobil 1 as I do with all my new cars. Since, I change it every 3000-3500 miles with the same. The dealer (in FL) has always recommended Mobil 1. My car, now with 15,500-miles started using 1-qt every 1000-miles since turning around 8500-miles.

I don't run it very hard except when provoked by a possible threat. I'm still on the original tires (that still look good at 15K) Most guys that pull-up and give me the look I say, "Okay, how much $$ do you got". I've noticed since the oil usuage I have black (slightly oily) soot on the inner edge of the exhaust pipes not present before. Only at night with a cars lights aimed toward me can I see light smoke when I nail the gas.

The dealer in Delray, FL called Honda-Tech (supposedly) and they said that a engine that revs to 9000 rpm's will use up to 1-qt every 1000-miles. It sounds fishy to me. The good thing is I let the dealer change my oil (Mobil 1) at $41.00 and they now let me stop by every 1000-miles for a free re-fill.

Anyone else had this problem?

Dave

Many of these engines burn quite a bit of oil until the rings seat. You may have delayed that by going to Mobil-1 very early. My suggestion would be to change back to conventional motor oil for 5-6K miles, keep an eye on oil consumption, and see if it finally slows down. Easy driving and synthetic oil may have kept you from completing a real break-in.

BigWave10, The consensus on this board is NOT to use MOBIL 1 until you have 10,000 miles on your stook. Take cdelena advice and change back to regular oil for at least 6,000 to 8,000 miles and then switch back to Mobil-1.

yup. this is the consensus. however, I changed over to Mobile 1 around 5500 miles. Thing is, with the conventional oil, it creates enough friction to seal those rings up - as cdelena mentioned. go back to the straight oil, and avoid synthetics for a while. its not good to change back and forth, but in this case you kinda need to.

SF, probably hard to flush the system so you end up mixing.

Don, I also heard that it's not good to go back & forth with synthetic & conventional. I'm not sure why..

Dave, I know it sounds stupid but if you added 1 qt. every 1000 miles, if oil wasn't burnt as those technicians said, wouldn't it be too much oil? have you checked the guage before you added oil? oil in your exhaust sounds like oil is overflowing.. I changed oil to castrol syntec when it was 3700 and changed it again at 5000 because oil was then more than 3 months old. I never had to add more oil in my stook.

Also, my mechanic said, even if you use synthetic, you should change it earlier (like 2~3000 miles), not because oil, because oil filter. It will stop filtering after couple of thousand miles and carbon deposit will start to form. And it happened to my Legend. I had to do engine flush to get it out. I hope I'm giving you useful advise..

cheers,

I can only say the same thing as nibble, its just what you hear. when you first hear of the properties of synthetic, how the oil is so much more consistent throughout than normal conventional oil, then you begin to understand a bit. one might eat away at the other, not sure. its just what "they say", and for my own safety, I've stopped running with scissors beacause of what "they say". =D

I had my first oil change at 600miles with mobile 1 and I
had changed my oil with mobile 1 or redline oil every 4000km. My S2000 is a 99 model and since it burnt some oil at the first 2 oil change. The engine don't burn excessive oil after about 5000km. Now my can had ran 15000km with no problem of burning excessive oil. I only need to add one marking of oil of the dip stick between oil change and I always vtech and stay above 6000rpm.
Mobil 1 is not the problems.

Thanks guys for all the info. I'm in VA this month and next so I had my car shipped up here. Next week we go to the MD dealership for the tranny fix/diff change/seatbelt recall so I'll bring it up to them. Its time for a oil change so I'll try the standard oil solution.

At one point I had a low rpm stumble in traffic. The Dealer's best mechanic went for a ride and told me to drive as I normally do. His conclusion was I was babying it too much and should almost never shift below 4k even in normal traffic. He said the engine is not designed to operate at low r's for any length of time. I took his advise and the hesitation disappeared. Previously I found myself feeling guilty of always pushing for the V-TECH. Not anymore!
