Your only option that I could see with regards to making the exit tip shorter is to cut the attaching pipe it's connected to and closing the polished tips more towards the mufflers themselves. Replacing the first muffler won't do much for weight savings but it probably will make the exhaust significantly louder. Making it shorter won't help to bring in the tips because the entire system is designed around specific bend points around the underside. It's not like you can just move everything forward. Canister style mufflers tend to be louder than the type you have there. This explains why the Racing Medalion is louder than the Hyper because they're essentially built the same (sans stainless steel throughout) with the first muffler being sort of a baffler. Personally speaking, I'd leave the first muffler on and concentrate on closing in the tips. You will probably have a system that is TOO loud with it off. If you have $$ to burn, replace the mufflers themselves with canisters and you'll be all set. More sound and less outboard on the tips since canister mufflers come in various sizes.

I have modded the Tanabe to make it fit right. Right now it sits perfect flush with the bumper.

I believe removing the first muffler will make the sound louder but the tone primarily comes from the rear mufflers. Now, if you go to canisters, the tone will be more aggressive...at least this has been my experience comparing full sized mufflers to canister style ones. To be honest, the TONE differences between just about every S2000 system (aftermarket) I've heard are incredibly small. It's the db level that distinquishes most of them from one another.

don't do it. It doesn't stick out too far. If you put a shorter pipe there, the hangers won't line up and something might not clear (not sure tho, you will see when you try to it tho).

I love the way mine sounds as it is. I wouldn't change/trade it in for anything else.
