Exhaust silencer on and off difference?
I've got a JIC single exhaust. When you take the silencer out, it goes from loud to ears-bleeding, brains-liquifying loud. Conversely, when you put the silencer back in, there's a noticeable drop in top-end power.
So yes, there is a big difference, at least for the JIC.

I've heard that is the case with most silencers - major power loss.
The manufacturers show horsepower gains from tests w/out the silencer. I would venture to bet that those gains are almost completely lost when the silencers are utilized.
Anyone want to counter this one? I still have stock so I can't say for sure.

An illustration of how much backpressure the silencer adds:
At an autocross last month, but even after a few minutes' struggle, I was unable to pull it out by hand. In a moment of inspiration, I started my car and revved it to around 6000 rpm, at which point the silencer shot out of the exhaust and landed a few feet away with a loud clang.
With that in mind, think about what that silencer's doing to your exhaust flow when it's bolted in there.
