I went back and reread Muz's description and it does not exactly say why! Anyway, it's a must to have something to protect the plastic window when the top is down, or it can get scratched up. The Muz Mat looks great and fits perfectly, but if you just want to put a 100% cotton towel in the well, it will do the job.
what happens is that when the roof gets lowered down, the plastic window scratches against the hard plastic in the roof well ..so when you raise the roof back up, you can see all these scratches all across your window..yes, you can use a cotton towel but i just installed my muz mat yesterday and looks great with the black and red trim..does the job too!..
The sooner you put something in the well the better. What happens is the plastic (easily scratchable) window rubs against the hard plastic in the roof well. Any dirt or dust in the well will just add to the problem.
The easiest way to take care of this is to put a soft piece of material that will act a cushion between the window and the well. The material should also be able to "absorb" the dust, this is why MJMSC recommends a 100% cotton towel.
I have a black piece of felt that seems to work well.
While we are on the topic you may want to investigate the window roll for the other side of the window. The roll should also have a 6"-8" piece of material that will protect from the window rubbing against itself. The following thread goes into more detail:

good luck

Thanks for your suggestions. This is my first convertible with a plastic window (the others have had glass)--so I have alot to learn. I am going to look into both the well mat (or towel or felt) and the roll to help with the crease. Thanks again.........
